Calculation

Share of dwellings in buildings constructed before 1949 among all dwellings. Reference date 15 May 2022. The Federal Statistical Office provides dwellings per 100 m grid cell by construction-year class. We add the classes “before 1919” and “1919 to 1948”. Each cell belongs to a planning area by its centre point. Kiez and district values come from the same cells, not from averaging planning-area values.

Coverage gaps

  • Planning areas with fewer than 30 dwellings show “no data”.
  • On the grid, the census only provides the classes “before 1919” and “1919 to 1948”. There is no finer split before 1949.

What we don't show

  • We count dwellings, not buildings. Villa districts with many single-family houses weigh less as a result.
  • The construction year says nothing about condition, refurbishment or fittings. Reference date 2022, and the cell-key method adds slight noise. No update until the register-based census in 2031.

Frequently asked questions

Night-time noise disturbs the sleep phases in which the cardiovascular system and nerves recover. The World Health Organization recommends a guideline value of 40 dB for night-time noise (LNIGHT). The Berlin noise mapping therefore reports LDEN and LNIGHT separately.
